There are many strange terms when talking about paint – one of them is “Breathable”.

So let’s explain: All over South Africa you can see paints peeling and flaking on buildings, even already after a couple of month. Many of the paint suppliers will suggest that the product should last 10, 15 & 20 years. What has gone wrong? 9 out of 10 times the cause is moisture.

The Impact Moisture has on Paint

Moisture builds up behind the film forming coatings of PVA paints, which restrict the passage of moisture to evaporate. Eventually, the moisture will push the paint off the wall or wooden surface in order to escape. Hence breathability is important and applies to both interior and exterior walls as well as wood.

Positive Benefits of breathable paints

Breathable paints have a number of positive benefits. These include:

  • Environmentally friendly
  • Reduction in the potential of damp forming
  • Limits mould growth in buildings
  • Non-Combustible
  • Keeps walls clean
  • Suitable for people with allergies
  • Suitable for both indoor & outdoor use

The other indicator of moisture ingress is through the formation of mould. Breathable paints significantly reduce the likelihood of mould growth, which will result in a cleaner, healthier environment. When moisture is trapped behind paint on timber, the wood starts rotting.

What’s the difference to conventional PVA paints?

Breathable paint reacts with the surface instead of adhering to the top of the surface it applies to. Besides the breathability aspect there are many more reasons, why you could consider opting for a “healthy” paint, which is VOC-free, contains natural ingredients, is asthma- and allergy-friendly and Washable & Scrub-Resistant.

Since 1997 ProNature is still the only company in South Africa, who manufactures “guaranteed eco-friendly” products with the absence of toxins like Ammonia, Formaldehyde, Crystalline Silica, odour-masking agents and volatile organic compounds.

The carefully sourced raw materials derive from natural and easily renewable resources, the colours are created with only mineral and plant-based pigments, which are harvested sustainably and a safe alternative to conventional synthetic systems.

Like no other company – all ingredients are listed on every product label and TDS/SDS, which rules out the well-known “green-washing” methods.

ProNature’s paints are biodegradable as they do not contain VOCS, HAPs, and EPA-exempt solvents (following European & American Standards).

Performance of Paints:

  • Coverage:  6sqm/litre/coat – similar to conventional coatings
  • Application: same as conventional PVA paints
  • Drying time: same as conventional PVA systems
  • Curing time: similar to conventional paints (ideally @ 20 degrees & low humidity)
