Five days on the Otter Trail taught me one thing: preservation matters – for wood, nature, and ourselves.
When you think you’re done, think again. I’m Bernhard – the Green Chemist (GC) – and my wife thought it’d be brilliant to relive our honeymoon on the Otter Trail, this time with our thirteen-year-old daughter joining us. Five days, 42 km, and heavy packs: a true test of endurance and perspective.
The Trail
Day after day, the Otter Trail reminded us of nature’s power. Steep climbs, river crossings, and rain-soaked gear stretched our limits. Nights brought basic huts – dim bunks and thin mattresses – but also the gift of silence, firelight, and family time without distractions.
Amid the challenges, nature revealed lessons that echoed ProNature’s philosophy. Naturally water-repellent branches sparked thoughts of protective finishes. Decaying staircases showed how untreated timber can fail, while treated wood could last decades. And sadly, plastics along riverbanks reminded us why sustainable choices matter – for wood, water, and life itself.
Reflections
The Otter Trail reinforced one truth: preservation changes everything. Just as ProNature products protect and enhance timber against sun, wind, and water, preparation and care protect hikers. Small investments – in quality gear, training, or finishes – turn hardship into something lasting and beautiful.
Being submerged in nature, looking for those elusive otters was an unforgettable experience, which our daughter summed up best: “Papa, I’m going to tell your grandchildren what an amazing time we had!”
Green Chemist Takeaways
- Train and prepare – don’t underestimate the elements.
- Preserve yourself the way ProNature preserves wood.
- Travel light – every extra weight adds up.
- Small comforts, like good boots or a cushion, matter.
- Don’t count steps – value each one, as you would each protective layer on wood.
